ICC Awaits Official Word As Pakistan’s India Boycott Risks Financial Fallout

Key Points

  • ICC awaits formal communication from Pakistan on its boycott of the India T20 World Cup match.
  • A forfeit could severely impact Pakistan's net run rate and its share of ICC revenue (estimated $34.5M).
  • The move follows diplomatic and cricket board tensions, including Pakistan's support for Bangladesh's earlier boycott.
Mumbai, Feb 1: The International Cricket Council has not yet received any formal communication from Pakistan regarding its decision to boycott the group-stage match against India at the T20 World Cup 2026, ICC sources said.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India also confirmed that it is yet to be officially informed of Pakistan’s announcement.

Pakistan on Sunday said it would participate in the T20 World Cup but would not take the field against India on February 15, a move that could have serious sporting and financial implications if carried through.

ICC Yet to Receive official Communication

ICC sources said that the global body was aware of Pakistan’s public statement but had not received any written confirmation from the Pakistan Cricket Board or the Pakistani government.

Without formal communication, the ICC has not initiated any process to assess the consequences of a potential boycott, sources said.

Forfeit Could severely dent Pakistan’s Net Run Rate

Under the ICC’s playing conditions, a team that forfeits a match is deemed to have played a full 20-over innings. Those overs are counted while calculating the team’s average runs per over, which could result in a sharp drop in Net Run Rate.

Such a scenario could significantly hurt Pakistan’s chances of advancing in the tournament.

India–Pakistan Match remains ICC’s Biggest Draw

The India-Pakistan clash is the most commercially valuable fixture in global cricket. Since 2012, the ICC has consistently placed the two teams in the same group at major tournaments to maximise viewership and revenue, even as bilateral cricket between the neighbours has remained suspended for more than a decade due to diplomatic tensions.

If Pakistan sticks to its position, the T20 World Cup 2026 would become the first men’s ICC tournament since 2010 without an India-Pakistan match.

Potential financial fallout for PCB

Sources close to the ICC had earlier told Hindustan Times that a boycott of the India game could directly impact Pakistan’s share of ICC revenues.

“As a direct consequence, the PCB’s share of ICC annual revenue, estimated at around $34.5 million, would be withheld,” an official had said.

Background to the standoff

Pakistan’s decision followed the ICC’s removal of Bangladesh from the tournament after Dhaka refused to play matches in India, citing security concerns. Pakistan had backed Bangladesh during an ICC vote on the matter, with the two boards being the only ones to support a venue change. Fourteen other member nations rejected the request.

Despite prior agreements between the ICC, the BCCI and the PCB to host India-Pakistan matches at neutral venues, the Pakistani government did not specify a reason for opting out of the India fixture.

Strained Relations Between PCB and BCCI

Relations between the two cricket boards have remained tense for years and worsened after India declined to travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. Tensions further escalated during the Asia Cup 2025, when Indian players refused to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts following the terror attack in Pahalgam.

The PCB had also delayed confirming its travel plans for the T20 World Cup until February 1, a move that sources say contributed to the current impasse.

The ICC is expected to seek clarity from Pakistan in the coming days as it looks to ensure smooth conduct of the tournament.
