New Delhi/Christchurch, Oct 22: India produced one of their finest batting performances in T20 internationals, chasing down a daunting 226-run target to defeat New Zealand by four wickets in the opening match of the five-match T20I series at Hagley Oval on Thursday.
The victory was anchored by a blistering 67 off 33 balls from Sanju Samson, whose aggressive strokeplay laid the foundation for India's highest-ever successful run chase in T20I cricket. Samson was later named Player of the Match for his match-defining knock, which included eight fours and four sixes.
Earlier, after winning the toss, India skipper Shreyas Iyer opted to bowl first. New Zealand capitalised on the decision, posting a formidable 225 for four in 20 overs. Glenn Phillips led the charge with an unbeaten 82 off 40 balls, striking eight fours and three sixes, while Finn Allen contributed a fluent 45 at the top of the order.
Facing a challenging target, India began aggressively. Samson and the top order propelled the visitors to 94 for one in the powerplay, putting the hosts under immediate pressure. However, New Zealand clawed their way back into the contest through their spin duo of Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell, who claimed crucial wickets in the middle overs, including those of Samson, Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan.

The momentum shifted decisively in India's favour when Naman Dhir unleashed a stunning late assault. The young batter smashed an unbeaten 42 off just 15 deliveries, combining power and composure to guide India home with wickets to spare.
Dhir's innings also entered the record books as the highest individual score by an Indian batter batting at No. 7 or lower in a successful T20I chase, surpassing Irfan Pathan's unbeaten 33 against Sri Lanka in 2009.
The victory gives India a 1-0 lead in the five-match series and underlines the batting depth within the side as it successfully chased down one of the highest targets in its T20I history.
