New Delhi, Sept 2: India has been named the host of the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy, scheduled from February 14–28, 2027, after Sri Lanka was stripped of hosting rights due to ongoing administrative reforms and government interference in its cricket board.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that the six-team tournament will be staged at two venues—the Cricket Club of India (CCI) in Mumbai and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium. Notably, the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, where India clinched the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, is not among the chosen venues.
“The tournament was originally scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka but will now be staged in India as Sri Lanka Cricket continues to make the requisite reforms outlined at the ICC’s Annual Conference in July,” the ICC said in a statement.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is currently overseen by a government-appointed ‘Transformation Committee’ tasked with constitutional and administrative overhauls. As the ICC prohibits political interference, SLC representatives have been barred from attending ICC board meetings since the committee’s formation.

The tournament will feature a round-robin format among six qualified sides—Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka—with the top two advancing to the final on February 28. Qualification was based on ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings as of July 6.
This relocation marks the second time in recent years Sri Lanka has lost hosting rights to a global event, following the 2024 Men’s Under-19 World Cup being shifted to South Africa.
