Volleyball / India Enter AVC Men’s Volleyball Asian Championship Quarterfinals

Fukuoka, Sept 9: India secured a place in the quarterfinals of the AVC Men’s Volleyball Asian Championship, advancing as one of the two best‑ranked third‑placed teams in the pools. This marks India’s first quarterfinal appearance at the continental event since 2019.

India’s qualification was confirmed after Bahrain defeated Oman 3‑0 on Wednesday, ensuring India’s progression to the last eight. The tournament in Fukuoka also serves as a qualification pathway for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and the 2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup.

India kept their hopes alive with a crucial 3‑0 (25‑22, 25‑18, 25‑21) victory over New Zealand in Pool B on Tuesday. Captain and opposite Jerome Vinith Charles led from the front with a match‑high 19 points, including two kill blocks. Outside hitters Chirag Yadav (three aces, one block) and Amit Balwan Singh (two blocks) contributed 14 and 13 points respectively.

India’s advancement hinged on the outcome of the Pool A clash between Oman and Bahrain. Had Oman secured three points, they would have edged India out. Bahrain’s win, however, placed both teams on point ratios, allowing India to qualify.

Elsewhere, hosts Japan maintained their unbeaten run, defeating Australia 3‑0 (25‑20, 25‑13, 25‑21) to top the pool standings. Australia finished second with a 2‑1 record, both teams already assured of quarterfinal berths.

India’s entry into the last eight is a significant boost for the squad, who now aim to build momentum in pursuit of Olympic qualification.
