Harare, Feb 6: India clinched a record sixth ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup title with a 100-run victory over England in the final at Harare Sports Club on Friday.

Powered by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s 175, India posted 411 for 9 after being sent in to bat. England were bowled out for 311 in response.

Sooryavanshi’s 175 came off 71 balls and included a tournament-record 22 sixes. He reached his century in 55 deliveries, the second-fastest hundred in Under-19 World Cup history, after bringing up his half-century in 32 balls. His 150 came up in 71 deliveries, the fastest in Under-19 cricket.

He shared a 142-run stand in 19 overs with captain Ayush Mhatre, who made 53 off 51 balls. After Sooryavanshi was dismissed in the 26th over, caught behind attempting a scoop off Thomas Rew, India maintained momentum through contributions from Abhigyan Kundu, Vedant Trivedi, Vihaan Malhotra and Kanishk Chouhan to cross the 400 mark.

Chasing 412, England lost Joseph Moores early after he chopped on to RS Ambrish. Ben Dawkins and Ben Mayes added 64 for the second wicket, but England slipped from 142 for 3 to 177 for 7 following regular strikes by Deepesh Devendran and others.

Caleb Falconer provided resistance with a rapid century, becoming England’s fastest centurion in Youth One-Day Internationals. He added 92 runs for the eighth wicket with James Minto, the highest partnership of England’s innings.

Minto was caught at backward point off Ambrish Chouhan, and Falconer soon followed, also falling to Chouhan. England were eventually bowled out for 311.

The victory marked India’s third Under-19 World Cup title in eight years and extended their record tally in the tournament.
