Amstelveen, Aug 19: Skipper Harmanpreet Singh and forward Abhishek starred as India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan 5–3 in their final Pool D clash at the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands, at Amstelveen in the Netherlands on Wednesday.

The victory ensured India finished second in the group and advanced to the next round, keeping their semifinal hopes alive.

Harmanpreet converted two penalty corners in the fifth and 21st minutes, while Abhishek struck twice with brilliant field goals in the 11th and 24th minutes. Vice-captain Hardik Singh added India’s fifth goal from a penalty stroke in the 35th minute, giving the team a commanding lead.

Pakistan fought back through Hannan Shahid, who scored in the 22nd and 46th minutes, while Sufyan Khan converted a penalty corner in the 24th minute to keep the contest alive.
