Hockey / Harmanpreet-Led India Ready for FIH Hockey World Cup 2026

New Delhi, Aug 11: The stage is set for India’s men’s hockey team to make a bold statement at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands from August 15 to 30.

With a 20-member squad blending seasoned campaigners and promising debutants, India aims to end a 51-year wait for another World Cup crown.

The team will be led by Harmanpreet Singh, India’s premier drag-flicker and defender, who is captaining the side for the second time in a World Cup. His leadership, penalty-corner expertise and defensive reliability make him central to India’s ambitions.

Defence

Alongside the captain, stalwarts like Odisha star Amit Rohidas and Jugraj Singh provide defensive solidity and additional drag-flicking options. Versatile defenders such as Jarmanpreet Singh, Sumit, and emerging talents like Yashdeep Siwach and Sanjay ensure depth and balance at the back.

Goalkeeping duties will be shared between Suraj Karkera, the experienced custodian with 89 caps, and Mohith HS, a promising 24-year-old making his World Cup debut. Their contrasting profiles — Suraj’s calm assurance and Mohith’s sharp reflexes — offer India flexibility in goal.

Midfield

India’s midfield is a blend of creativity, composure and relentless energy. Manpreet Singh, with a staggering 417 caps, is the most experienced player not just in India but across all 16 teams in the tournament. A former captain, Manpreet’s leadership and tactical intelligence remain invaluable.

He is supported by Hardik Singh, known for his athleticism and ball-winning ability, and Vivek Sagar Prasad, whose agility and quick transitions make him a vital link between defence and attack.

Nilakanta Sharma adds composure and distribution, while youngsters Rajinder Singh and Aditya Arjun Lalage bring fresh energy and attacking intent. Aditya, at 23, is the youngest member of the squad and one of eight debutants.

Attack

India’s forward line is spearheaded by Mandeep Singh, appearing in his fourth World Cup, whose intelligent movement and finishing ability make him a proven goal-scorer.

Alongside him, Abhishek offers dynamism and sharp tomahawk finishes, while Dilpreet Singh and Sukhjeet Singh provide pace and creativity.

Another Odisha star Shilanand Lakra, another debutant, adds pressing intensity and attacking flair.

This attacking unit, combining experience and youthful exuberance, is expected to challenge defences with speed, skill and relentless pressure inside the striking circle.

All three matches will be played in the Netherlands.
