F1 Title Race All But Over! How Kimi Antonelli Can Seal the Crown in Mexico
Kimi Antonelli now holds a commanding 123-point lead over Russell and a 124-point advantage over Hamilton with just five races remaining.

Key Points

Kimi Antonelli moved within touching distance of a historic first Formula 1 title after a dominant Austin victory, leaving rivals trailing and putting the Mercedes prodigy one race from glory.

New Delhi, Oct 26: Every great Formula 1 champion has a defining season, and 2026 is shaping up to be Kimi Antonelli's.

The Mercedes prodigy strengthened his march towards a maiden world title with a dominant win in Austin, leaving rivals running out of races, points and perhaps hope as he closes in on one of the most remarkable achievements in the sport's history.

The 20-year-old Italian produced another standout performance for Mercedes, converting a one-stop strategy into a crucial win that has left him within touching distance of securing his maiden Formula 1 title.

His drive earned high praise from team principal Toto Wolff, who described it as “the race of a champion who isn't the champion yet, but exceptional.”

Antonelli’s triumph proved particularly significant as his closest championship challengers failed to maximise their opportunities. Teammate George Russell endured a difficult afternoon and finished eighth, while Lewis Hamilton crossed the line in fourth.

As a result, Antonelli now holds a commanding 123-point lead over Russell and a 124-point advantage over Hamilton with just five races remaining.

The latest standings place Antonelli at the top on 365 points, followed by Russell on 242 and Hamilton on 241. Following the Austin race, the title battle has effectively become a three-man contest.

Antonelli’s victory mathematically eliminated all other contenders, including Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and reigning 2025 champion Lando Norris.

With only 125 points still available across the remaining five rounds, Antonelli could seal the championship as early as the next race in Mexico. To guarantee the title there, he simply needs to ensure he does not lose more than 23 points to Russell and 24 points to Hamilton over the weekend.

In practical terms, a ninth-place finish or better would be enough to crown him world champion regardless of whether Russell or Hamilton win the race. Even if Antonelli fails to score, he could still secure the title if neither of his rivals takes victory in Mexico.

The mathematics increasingly favour the Mercedes youngster. Should either Russell or Hamilton miss out on a win in Mexico, they would fall to a deficit of more than 100 points with only 100 points available over the final four races, making it impossible to catch Antonelli.

Even in the unlikely event of a points tie at season’s end, Antonelli would still emerge as champion due to his superior race-win count. The Italian has already claimed nine victories this season, compared with Russell’s three and Hamilton’s one.

Therefore, even if Russell were to win each of the remaining five races and finish level on points with Antonelli, the championship would still belong to the young Mercedes driver on countback.

A successful title bid would also rewrite the Formula 1 record books. At just 20 years of age, Antonelli would become the youngest drivers’ world champion in the sport’s history, surpassing Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 years and 134 days old when he captured his first championship in 2010.

With momentum firmly on his side and the title now within sight, Antonelli heads to Mexico knowing that Formula 1 glory could be only one race away.
