Colombo, Aug 24: India stamped their authority on Day Two of the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, declaring at 503/9 before reducing the hosts to a fragile 8/2 in just three overs.

Bad light eventually forced early stumps, but not before India had seized complete control of the contest.

The highlight of the day was wicketkeeper‑batter Dhruv Jurel’s unbeaten 115, his second Test century and first on Sri Lankan soil. His knock, built with patience and resilience, came after a rain delay of two hours and ten minutes in the final session.

Jurel’s innings ensured India a commanding lead of 495 runs, setting the stage for their bowlers to unleash pressure on Sri Lanka’s top order.

India’s declaration was followed by a fiery new‑ball burst. Mohammed Siraj opened with a miserly over, conceding just a single run.

Prasidh Krishna then struck with his second delivery, pitching back of a length outside off and squaring up Lahiru Udara. The edge flew to gully, where Yashasvi Jaiswal dived to his right to complete a sharp catch, dismissing Udara for one.

With light fading, India introduced left‑arm spinner Manav Suthar. He immediately troubled nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya, striking him on the pad with a quicker arm‑ball that narrowly missed leg stump on umpire’s call. But Suthar had the last word, firing in a flatter delivery that skidded through to trap Jayasuriya lbw.

On‑field umpire Ahsan Raza raised his finger, and though Jayasuriya reviewed, ball‑tracking confirmed the delivery was clipping leg stump. A visibly frustrated Jayasuriya departed for two, flinging his gloves in anger as play was halted due to poor visibility.

Earlier in the day, Jurel showcased remarkable composure. Resuming alongside Siraj, he resisted Sri Lanka’s close‑in fielders and waited patiently for his moment. His century arrived after 22 deliveries of watchful play, when he drove a full ball from Fernando over the bowler’s head and scampered a risky single as a direct hit missed.

Jurel celebrated by raising his sleeve to reveal a tattoo reading “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan,” before Siraj embraced him warmly.

With the milestone secured, Jurel shifted gears, lofting Fernando over long‑on for six. Siraj’s 29‑ball stay ended when Jayasuriya trapped him plumb lbw, with India burning a review.

Joined by Krishna, Jurel continued his assault, pulling Fernando for another six and adding quick runs. Krishna capped the innings by slicing a low full‑toss through cover for four, pushing India past the 500‑mark. Skipper Shubman Gill then declared, confident of India’s dominance.

Day Two belonged entirely to India. From Jurel’s century to the incisive strikes of Krishna and Suthar, the visitors tightened their grip on the match. With Sri Lanka trailing by 495 runs and eight wickets in hand, India’s push for vital World Test Championship points looks firmly on track.
