Cricket / Delhi Capitals Cricketer Abishek Porel Arrested in Rape Case

Kolkata, Aug 11: Delhi Capitals cricketer Abishek Porel was arrested late Monday night by Mogra police in Hooghly, following a directive from the Calcutta High Court in connection with a rape case filed by a third-year medical student.

On Tuesday, Porel was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Chinsurah. His bail plea was rejected, and he was remanded to three days of police custody.

The Complainant

The complainant is a third-year medical student from Karnataka. In her FIR lodged at Mogra police station on June 23, she stated that she first met Porel in January 2023 and remained in regular contact with him from April that year.

She alleged that they were in a relationship for over three years, during which Porel promised to marry her. Families from both sides were reportedly involved in marriage discussions. Her identity has not been disclosed, in line with Supreme Court directives protecting sexual assault survivors.

Allegations

The woman accused Porel of sexually assaulting her under the false promise of marriage. She claimed that during a visit to Delhi on April 2 this year, she was tortured, isolated, and denied food, eventually requiring hospitalisation.

She further alleged that Porel threatened her, warning that intimate photographs could be leaked. Following this, she approached Mogra police and filed an FIR. Dissatisfied with the pace of investigation, she later petitioned the Calcutta High Court.

Charges and Court Order

Police registered a case under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 69, which deals with sexual intercourse by deceitful means such as false promises of marriage, along with relevant sections of the Information Technology Act.

On July 14, Justice Saugata Bhattacharya of the Calcutta High Court ordered Bengal Police to arrest Porel and seize his electronic devices to prevent dissemination of objectionable material. Police confirmed they had already seized a pen drive for forensic examination but Porel had remained at large until his arrest.

Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunar Bhushan Singh confirmed the arrest, stating that it was carried out in compliance with the court’s directive. Porel and his family have not yet issued any public statement regarding the allegations.
