Bhubaneswar, May 27: India has secured another major milestone in international athletics with the announcement that Bhubaneswar will host the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in 2027.


The decision was made during the Asian Athletics Council meeting held in Hong Kong today, marking a proud moment for both Odisha and the nation.


World Athletics vice president Adille Sumariwalla confirmed the development on social media, adding that Chandigarh will host the Asian Relays in 2028. He described the twin announcements as a significant achievement for India’s athletics community.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi welcomed the news, stating that the recognition reflects the state’s growing reputation as a global sports hub. “Odisha’s world-class infrastructure and exceptional capability to successfully manage large-scale international competitions have established us as a major hub in the global sports world today. Hosting the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2027 is a moment of immense pride and glory for the entire country as well as the people of Odisha,” Majhi said in a post on X.


The Chief Minister further noted that the event will precede the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2028, also scheduled to be held at Bhubaneswar’s iconic Kalinga Stadium. He emphasized that this achievement adds another golden chapter to Odisha’s sporting journey, strengthening the state’s identity and inspiring young athletes to gain international recognition.

India’s track record in hosting athletics events has been steadily growing. Bhubaneswar previously hosted the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships and, in 2023, successfully organized the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze Level Competition, which drew over 200 athletes from across the globe. With the upcoming Asian Indoor Championships and Asian Relays, India continues to cement its place on the global athletics stage.
