ATTU Executive Board Meeting to shape sport’s future

Bhubaneswar, Sept 13: Bhubaneswar is set to host the 28th ITTF-ATTU Asian Table Tennis Championships from October 11 at the world-class Athletic Centre of Kalinga Stadium here in Odisha, officials said on Saturday.

With 22 nations confirming participation, following the UAE’s withdrawal, the event marks the first time the state will host a continental table tennis championship—solidifying Bhubaneswar’s growing reputation as India’s emerging sports capital.

Organized by the Odisha State Table Tennis Association (OSTTA) with full support from the state government, the five-day championship will welcome over 500 participants, including 450 elite players and support staff, along with 70–80 top officials from the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU). The scale of the event reflects Odisha’s commitment to hosting global sporting spectacles.

Returning to India after 16 years, the championship promises high-octane action, especially with powerhouse nations like China, Japan, and Korea fielding formidable 10-member squads. These teams view the tournament as a key preparatory ground for the 2026 World Team Championships in London.

For other Asian nations, Bhubaneswar offers a golden opportunity to qualify for the Worlds, with 12 slots open in each category. The competition is expected to be fierce, adding intensity and excitement to the championship.

From India’s perspective, the event is a crucial test. Both men’s and women’s teams have already qualified for London through the South Asia Regional route, but this championship will pit them against the continent’s best. Indian paddlers are sharpening their skills through national and international tournaments, hoping to leverage home advantage and crowd support.

Adding strategic weight to the event, the Executive Board Meeting of ATTU will be held on October 13, during the championship. This high-level gathering will shape the future of table tennis in Asia, discussing development programs and international collaborations.

With Bhubaneswar hosting both the championship and the ATTU board meeting, Odisha is not just showcasing its infrastructure—it’s stepping into a leadership role in shaping the sport’s future across Asia.
