Darwin, Aug 16: Bangladesh secured a historic maiden Test victory in Australia on Sunday, defeating the hosts by nine wickets in the series opener at Marrara Oval.

Chasing a target of 57, Bangladesh reached 57/1 in 14.2 overs in the second session. Mominul Haque remained unbeaten on 30, while Shadman Islam was not out on 25 as Bangladesh took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

The victory was Bangladesh's first Test win on Australian soil in their third attempt and their second overall against Australia. Their previous victory came in Dhaka in 2017.

Bangladesh's triumph came after they entered the match as underdogs following an innings defeat to a Cricket Australia XI, during which they were bowled out for 54.

Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud was named Player of the Match after taking 9-111 across the two innings. He claimed 6-66 in Australia's first innings as the hosts were dismissed for 198 on the opening day.

Australia showed greater resistance in their second innings, with Cameron Green scoring a century. Green's 104 helped Australia reach 284 before being bowled out.

Off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz took 5-56 in Australia's second innings, his 15th five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Bangladesh had earlier posted 426 in their first innings, with opener Tanzid Hasan scoring his maiden Test century and Mehidy contributing 65.

The result means Bangladesh cannot lose the two-match series. The second Test is scheduled to begin next week at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay.
