Bhubaneswar, Sep 24: In a surprising twist amid simmering India-Pakistan diplomatic tensions, veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is reportedly in talks to join the same Big Bash League (BBL) franchise as Pakistan’s star all-rounder Shadab Khan — Sydney Thunder.

If finalized, this move could mark a rare moment of sporting camaraderie between players from the two cricketing giants, despite strained political relations.

Reports from Australian outlets, Ashwin is likely to join Thunder following the conclusion of the UAE’s ILT20 conclusion in early January. The former India spinner had earlier committed to the entirety of the ILT20 which ends on January 4, stating that he will entering the auction.

Notably, the Thunder had signed up Pakistan’s Shadab Khan in the draft that took place in June.

Ashwin brings a wealth of experience and tactical depth. The prospect of Ashwin and Shadab sharing the dressing room has already raised many eyebrows.

Given the current diplomatic scene between India and Pakistan, some officials have expressed concerns over the optics of such a move. Cricket boards from both nations have avoided bilateral engagements for over a decade, and this development could test the boundaries of that informal understanding.
