Guwahati, Sep 30: West Indies produced a batting exhibition led by centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo to post a mammoth  405 for seven against India in the second ODI at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday, setting the hosts a daunting target of 406 runs to win the match.

After India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bowl, the visitors made full use of a batting-friendly surface as their top order dismantled the Indian attack with aggressive strokeplay and sustained partnerships.

Campbell sets the tone

Opener John Campbell provided the early impetus with a blistering century off just 65 balls. The left-hander reached the milestone in the 17th over and finished after laying a strong foundation for a massive total. His knock included nine boundaries and five sixes and registered the fastest ODI century by a West Indies batter against India.

Campbell had earlier raced to a 29-ball fifty, surpassing Chris Gayle's record for the fastest ODI half-century by a West Indies batter against India.

Hope, Jangoo pile on runs

West Indies captain Shai Hope continued the assault with a polished 104 off 94 deliveries, anchoring the innings while keeping the scoring rate high. Amir Jangoo then accelerated dramatically in the latter stages, smashing 114 off just 77 balls.

Jangoo shifted gears after a measured start, moving from 59 off 54 balls to a three-figure score in only 70 deliveries. His late flourish helped West Indies cross the 400-run mark for the first time in ODI history.

The total was also West Indies' highest ODI score and the third-highest total scored against India in the format.

India's challenge

For India, Gurnoor Brar, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja picked up two wickets each. Kuldeep also reached the milestone of 200 ODI wickets during the innings.

India's bowling effort was further hampered by injuries to Prasidh Krishna and Naman Dhir. With 406 runs required from 50 overs at a run rate of 8.12, the hosts will now rely on the batting trio of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli to pull off a record chase and secure the series.
