Key Points

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s cousin Gyan Singh Mann joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in Chandigarh, alongside other leaders. Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar warned officials against bias and condemned attacks on party offices, asserting that accountability will follow.
Chandigarh, May 11: In a significant political development, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s cousin Gyan Singh Mann formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday. He was inducted into the party in Chandigarh by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar.

Joining him were Barnala-based businessman and NRI Baljinder Singh Barnala, and Manjinder Singh Sajan Khera, former personal assistant to Jalalabad MLA Goldy Kamboj and AAP’s Arniwala Johl. The leaders said they had initially joined AAP with hopes of change but, disillusioned by its governance, decided to align with the BJP.

Addressing a joint press conference, Jakhar strongly condemned recent attacks on BJP offices and workers in Amritsar, Batala, Tarn Taran, and Ludhiana. He warned that “everyone will be held accountable,” including police and civil officers. “Officials are paid from the state treasury and are accountable to the people of Punjab, not to any political party,” Jakhar said, cautioning that misuse of power would invite action.

Jakhar also criticized AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal and CM Bhagwant Mann, stating that attacks on BJP offices would not deter central agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He asserted that corruption probes would continue and “every corrupt individual will eventually be brought to account.”

Drawing parallels with West Bengal, Jakhar said AAP would not be allowed to create “Mamata Banerjee-style Bengal-like conditions” in Punjab. He accused AAP of resorting to “goondaism” and intimidation with police support, but insisted that BJP would resist such tactics.

Responding to media queries, Jakhar said the BJP is fully prepared for the upcoming local body elections and claimed that people of Punjab are ready to end what he termed AAP’s “corrupt rule.” He further warned that government machinery must remain neutral during elections, failing which biased officers would also face accountability.

The Joining of Bhagwant Mann’s cousin into BJP is being seen as a symbolic setback for AAP in Punjab, adding to the political churn ahead of local polls.
