Senior BJD leader Badrinarayan Patra rejects talks of Pandian’s leadership, warning the party could suffer, stressing loyalty to Naveen Patnaik and Biju ideals amid internal rifts after election setbacks.
Bhubaneswar, Apr 28: Senior BJD leader and Ghasipura MLA Badri Narayan Patra has sparked a political storm within the party by openly rejecting discussions about VK Pandian’s possible leadership role.
His sharp remarks have highlighted internal rifts in the party following its recent electoral setbacks.
Patra, a veteran leader, categorically stated that the BJD was built on the ideals of Biju Patnaik and continues under the leadership of Naveen Patnaik, not Pandian. “We did not join the party under Pandian’s leadership. He has caused significant damage to the organisation. Decisions about leadership should be taken only by the party president,” Patra said.

He further warned that if Pandian were to assume responsibility, he would be the first to quit the party. “Thinking that we will remain under Pandian’s leadership is wrong. If such a situation arises, I will leave the party immediately,” he asserted.

✨The Ghasipura MLA dismissed Pandian’s influence within the BJD, claiming that attempts to project him as a saviour would backfire. He alleged that many leaders opposing Pandian’s role would resist strongly, while only a few might support him.
“After the poor election results, some are chanting his name out of desperation. But the party will suffer if his influence grows,” Patra cautioned.
He also criticized the removal of Biju Patnaik’s photo from BJD posters during the election campaign, saying those responsible have already faced the consequences. “The party was founded on Biju Babu’s ideals. Those who tried to erase his legacy have lost relevance,” he remarked.
Patra reiterated that the BJD’s existence is not under threat, emphasizing that individuals may come and go, but the party will endure. He stressed that all decisions must be taken collectively through party consultation, not imposed by individuals.
His comments have intensified the debate over Pandian’s role
in the party, with many viewing them as a direct challenge to any move to
elevate him. The controversy underscores the growing unease within the BJD.
