Bhubaneswar, Jul 13: In a tragic incident, a Class XI student allegedly died after falling from a high-rise apartment pipe while attempting to hide from his girlfriend’s mother in Laxmisagar area here in Odisha on Monday, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Rafan Khursid, a 17-year-old student at a private school in the city. He was the son of a Relationship Manager at a private bank
Police said Rafan had gone to meet his girlfriend, who was alone at home. While the two were inside the apartment, her mother arrived unexpectedly. In panic, Rafan rushed into the bathroom and then attempted to avoid detection by climbing onto a pipe in the duct yard of the building.
CCTV footage reportedly shows Rafan hanging from the tenth-floor pipe for several minutes before losing balance and falling. He sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. The body was seized and sent to Capital Hospital for post-mortem examination.

✨Meanwhile, police questioned the girl’s family and are
examining CCTV footage to reconstruct the sequence of events. Officials said
they are probing whether the death was purely accidental or if foul play was
involved.

Police said forensic and post-mortem reports will provide further clarity. For now, the case is being treated as an unnatural death, with all angles under scrutiny.
Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena confirmed that a detailed probe is underway, stating that all aspects of the incident are being verified.
The youth’s sudden death has shocked the local community, raising concerns about safety and supervision in residential complexes.
