Bhubaneswar, Aug 16: A tragic incident unfolded in Balipatna, Khurda district, where a youth succumbed to his burn injuries early this morning at AIIMS Bhubaneswar after allegedly setting himself on fire over a long-standing family property dispute.

According to reports, the victim, son of a retired police officer, poured petrol and set himself on fire.

The victim had been against his father over property. The dispute intensified after the victim’s father allegedly transferred ownership of a newly acquired property to his second wife’s son.

The situation got tensed after the victim, in a fit of rage, allegedly poured petrol on himself and set himself ablaze at his house. He was rescued and initially admitted to Capital Hospital. However, he was later shifted to AIIMS due to the severity of his injuries, which covered over 95% of his body. Later, he died while undergoing treatment.

Acting swiftly, police registered a case and detained victim’s father and his son from the second marriage for questioning.

Further investigations into the incident is underway to determine the exact circumstances leading to the fatal act.
