Kendrapada, Jan 9: The body of a young woman was recovered from a rented house at Suanlo village under Kendrapara Town police limits, triggering shock and concern in the locality, a source said Friday.
The deceased has been identified as Pratikshya Nayak, a native of Taras village under Rajkanika police station. She had been residing in Suanlo village on rent while preparing for the B.Ed entrance examination, her family said.
According to the source, Pratikshya last spoke to her family on the evening of January 7. However, when her mother tried to contact her the following day, her mobile phone was found switched off. Growing anxious after repeated calls went unanswered, the family sought help from one of her former colleagues.
Pratikshya’s father, Bhimasen Nayak, said, “When my wife called my daughter today, she did not receive the call. As she was staying alone on rent at Sunailo village for B.Ed preparation, we got worried. When she did not return our calls till evening, we contacted her former colleague at the Kendrapada Municipality, JE Sudhanshu Sir, and requested him to enquire about her.”
He further said Sudhanshu later called them around 6 pm and asked them to rush to Kendrapada town. “While we were on our way, police informed us about our daughter’s death,” he added.
Family members, who later reached the rented house, found Pratikshya’s body lying on the floor inside the room. Police said a sari was found hanging from the ceiling fan, and the fan blades were bent.
Bhimsen Nayak has lodged a complaint at Kendrapara Town police station, alleging that his daughter was sexually assaulted and murdered. Police have registered a case and detained a young man for questioning in connection with the incident.
Pratikshya had earlier worked under the Swachh Bharat Mission at Kendrapara Municipality. Police said a post-mortem examination and forensic analysis are underway, and all angles are being investigated.
