Self Immolation / Woman Critical With 80% Burns After Self-Immolation Bid in Kendrapada's Rajnagar

Kendrapada, Sep 29: A woman suffered severe burn injuries after allegedly pouring petrol over herself and setting herself on fire at Barhapur village under Koilipur panchayat in Rajnagar police station limits of Kendrapada district, a source said on Tuesday.

Around 80% of her body surface was burnt, and she was initially admitted to Rajnagar Community Health Centre (CHC) for treatment. As her condition was critical, she was later shifted to Kataka for further treatment.

Dr Gyanaranjan Sahoo, Medical Officer at Rajnagar CHC, said, "The woman was admitted with secondary burns. Around 80% of her body surface area was burnt. We provided her with primary treatment. Her relatives said that she had poured petrol on herself. We referred her to Cuttack as she was critical."

Family Cites Son Returning From School
According to family members, the woman took the step after becoming angry when her son returned home from school at around 1 pm.

It is also alleged that the woman set herself on fire in front of her son.

However, the exact reason behind the incident has not been established.

Questions have also been raised over how the woman allegedly poured petrol over herself and set herself on fire despite other family members being present at home.

The woman's family members have not provided any further reaction regarding the incident.
