Bhubaneswar, Mar 29: A major wildlife smuggling attempt was thwarted at Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar, with customs officials recovering a significant haul of rare and exotic wildlife species, which includes a chameleon, a monitor lizard, snakes, and turtles.

The incident came to light during a routine baggage check.

Following the search, the suspect, who reportedly hails from Chennai, was immediately detained.

The accused had concealed the reptiles inside packets intended for cakes and biscuits. The consignment was reportedly enroute to Chennai from Bangkok via Bhubaneswar.

Taking note of the incident, Odisha Forest Department officials reached the spot and initiated a probe.
