Bhubaneswar, May 20: The wait for the much-anticipated southwest monsoon is nearing its end, as meteorologists predict its arrival over Kerala within the next 4-5 days.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has observed favourable conditions for the monsoon’s progression across parts of South Arabian Sea, Maldives, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, South & Central Bay of Bengal, and Northeast India.
With its onset over Kerala, the southwest monsoon will set the pace for the crucial rainy season, impacting agriculture, water reserves, and overall climatic patterns across the subcontinent.
Monsoon’s Northern Limit and Expected Progress
The current Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) extends across 5°N/60°E, 6°N/65°E, 7°N/70°E, 7°N/75°E, 8°N/80°E, 10.5°N/85°E, 15°N/90°E, and 21°N/95°E, indicating the steady northward advance of moisture-laden winds.
As the monsoon intensifies over the next few days, it is expected to cover more areas of South Arabian Sea, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, and additional regions in Bay of Bengal and Northeastern states, bringing relief from soaring summer temperatures.
Impact on Agriculture and Economy
The timely arrival of monsoon rains is vital for India’s agricultural sector, particularly in the rain-fed regions of southern and eastern India. Farmers are optimistic as the rainfall replenishes groundwater levels and aids in sowing crops. Additionally, the onset of monsoon could ease power demand pressures, particularly in heatwave-affected states.
As Kerala readies itself for the first showers of the season, weather analysts predict normal monsoon patterns, ensuring a steady distribution of rainfall across the country.
