Burla, Dec 5: What began as a consensual relationship between two students of VSSUT Burla took a disturbing turn this week, ending in police action and serious allegations of abuse.
Burla Police on Thursday arrested a final-year engineering student after his girlfriend accused him of assault, intimidation and confinement following a dispute between them.
According to the complaint, the two had been in a relationship for several months. However, a conflict reportedly escalated, leading to heated arguments. The woman alleged that the male student assaulted her during one such altercation. She further claimed that he used an objectionable video to blackmail her over the past three months and forced her to stay in a rented house in Burla. She also accused him of demanding money and torturing her physically.
Police said the victim managed to escape from the rented accommodation late Wednesday night and reached Burla Police Station for help. Acting on her complaint, officers arrested the accused and produced him before court.
A Personal Dispute That Mirrors a Larger Pattern
While police emphasised that this is a personal dispute that spiralled into violence, the incident comes at a time when crimes against women remain a concern in Odisha. According to the NCRB 2023 report, Odisha recorded 25,914 cases of crimes against women, placing it among states with higher reporting.
