Sambalpur, July 26: A monsoon outing turned tragic on Friday when two final-year MBBS students from Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla, drowned at the Debjharan Waterfall in Odisha’s Sambalpur district.


The victims have been identified as Monika Meena and Sandeep Puri.


According to sources, a group of six final-year MBBS students of VIMSAR visited the popular tourist spot for a day trip. The victim duo slipped while navigating the rocky terrain near the waterfall and were swept away by strong currents.

After getting information, fire services and police teams from Jujumura rushed to the scene and recovered the bodies after an intensive search operation.


The incident has sent shockwaves through the VIMSAR campus, with students and faculty mourning the loss of two promising young lives.


Jujumura Police registered a case and started an investigation into the incident.
