Flood Fury / Village Cut Off by Floods, Odisha Groom Finds a Way to Keep His Wedding Promise

Jajpur, Jul 31: While floodwaters engulfed vast stretches of Odisha, one wedding in Jajpur district stood as a quiet testament to love, resilience and determination. Even as nature unleashed its fury, it could not stop a long-awaited union from finally taking place. With roads submerged and his village cut off from the outside world, a groom travelled by country boat with his wedding procession to reach his bride in Dhenkanal district.

The unusual journey from Similia village has drawn widespread attention, highlighting both the resilience of rural communities and the chronic infrastructure challenges faced by flood-prone areas.

Wedding Procession Takes To The Water
Flooding has completely severed road connectivity to Similia village under Jajpur Sadar block. However, with the wedding date and auspicious time fixed well in advance, postponement was not considered an option.

Instead, groom Pramod Padhi and his wedding party boarded a country boat to cross the floodwaters before continuing their journey to Bhuban in Dhenkanal district.

The rare sight of a groom and his relatives travelling through floodwaters quickly became the centre of attention for residents and passers-by.

'A Memorable Yet Painful Day': Groom
Describing the experience, groom Pramod Padhi said the day would remain unforgettable for both joyful and painful reasons.


"Certainly a memorable day for me. I am equally sad and happy today. I am relieved that we were able to cross the flooded stream as my village, Similia, is disconnected. I am equally disappointed that all of us had to take boats to access the road in today's day and age. The authorities should take this seriously."

Celebration Amid Adversity
Despite the hardships caused by the floods, the enthusiasm of the wedding party remained undiminished. Children accompanying the procession were visibly excited, while family members embraced the unusual circumstances with optimism.

The groom said the extraordinary journey had turned his wedding into a once-in-a-lifetime memory.

Journey Renews Focus On Rural Connectivity
Beyond the heartwarming visuals, the incident has reignited concerns over the lack of reliable transport infrastructure in Odisha's flood-prone regions.

Locals said they are repeatedly forced to undertake risky journeys during the monsoon because permanent connectivity issues remain unresolved.
