Bhubaneswar, Dec 1: Since the formation of the BJP government in Odisha, action against graft-tainted officials has intensified, with the Vigilance Directorate registering 318 cases from June 12, 2024, till date, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the Assembly in a written reply on Monday.
As per the data, Vigilance conducted raids in 82 disproportionate assets (DA) cases, targeting government employees accused of possessing wealth beyond known sources of income. During these operations, assets worth Rs 208.24 crore were seized.
Out of the 318 cases registered in the past 17 months, 266 government officers and employees were arrested. Another 12 public servants and 38 private individuals were taken into custody during the investigations.
The state government informed the House that charge sheets have been filed in 67 cases out of a total of 318 cases, while investigations are underway in the remaining cases. The Chief Minister also noted that a total of 270 government and contractual employees were arrested by Vigilance units across the state between June 2024 and November 21, 2025.
Vigilance conducted multiple raids on 31 officials, highlighting repeated findings of irregularities. Courts designated for Vigilance matters have convicted 187 government employees, prompting administrative action. Following these convictions, 34 government employees were dismissed from service, and pension benefits of 65 employees were withheld.
In May this year, Vigilance arrested Chief Engineer Baikuntha Nath Sarangi and remanded him to jail in a major disproportionate assets case. Officials revealed that Sarangi's seized assets, valued at a staggering 483 per cent above his legitimate income, include Rs 2.56 crore in cash, two multi-storey buildings, two flats, and seven valuable plots.

The massive haul further comprises fixed deposits and financial holdings worth over RS 3 crore, alongside 1.4 kilograms of gold and 15 luxury foreign watches. According to K Venugopal Acharya, SP of Cuttack Vigilance Division, the engineer was illegally collecting money from various individuals.
