Bhubaneswar, Aug 21: Veteran Odia playback singer and Jayadev Award recipient Pranab Patnaik passed away at a private hospital on Friday. He was 88.

Patnaik, who had been unwell for some time and was undergoing treatment, died suddenly on Friday, a source said. His death has left the Odia music and film industry mourning the loss of one of its prominent voices.

Born on January 20, 1938, Patnaik began his singing career in 1958 with the Odia film 'Maa', under the music direction of Bhubaneswar Misra. He went on to lend his voice to more than 200 Odia films during a career spanning several decades.


A Voice Across Genres
Patnaik was not limited to film songs. He also made significant contributions to Odissi music, bhajans, semi-classical, modern, folk and ghazal music.

His popular songs include 'Mo Priya Tharu Kie Adhika Sundara', 'Mana Manena', 'Sita Rama Nama', 'Au Chhuana Chhuana' and 'Tume Janana Ki Mun Janena'.

Films including 'Sri Lokanath', 'Suryamukhi', 'Sindura Bindu', 'Shesha Shrabana', 'Chinha Achinha' and 'Batighara' further established him as a leading playback singer in the Odia film industry.

He also worked with several nationally recognised artists during his career.

Jayadev Award In 2016
Patnaik received the State Film Award seven times for his contribution to Odia cinema and music. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to Odia music, he was honoured with the Jayadev Award, the state's highest film honour, in 2016.

Beyond cinema, he contributed extensively to non-film music through All India Radio, Doordarshan and music albums. His first ghazal album, Shab-e-Ghazal, was released in 1992.

Songs such as 'Majhire' and 'Nijhum Rati' also became popular among Odia listeners.

Patnaik's death has triggered an outpouring of grief across Odisha's artistic and cultural circles, with his decades-long contribution to Odia music being remembered.
