Rayagada, Sep 9: In a major political shake-up, senior leaders N Bhaskar Rao and Lal Bihari Himirika have resigned from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
Their departure marks a significant setback for the ruling party ahead of the upcoming elections.
Bhaskar Rao, a former Rajya Sabha MP and district president of Rayagada, confirmed his resignation, stating, “I am no longer continuing with BJD. I will not join any other party but will continue my social service.”
His decision comes amid growing unrest within the party’s regional units, particularly over what many perceive as a lack of transparency and inclusivity in organizational appointments.
Lal Bihari Himirika, a veteran tribal leader and former MLA from Rayagada, also tendered his resignation, further deepening the crisis in the party’s southern stronghold.
Both leaders have played pivotal roles in strengthening BJD’s presence in tribal regions and their exit is expected to impact the party’s grassroots mobilisation.
