Odisha Markets / Vegetable Prices Sky-High Across Odisha Amid Flood Furies

Bhubaneswar, Jul 30: The flood situation in Odisha has begun to hit kitchens hard, with vegetable prices soaring across markets in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Balasore, Berhampur and other towns. Farmers’ fields have been inundated, destroying standing crops and triggering a sharp spike in retail prices, locals said on Thursday.

Crops Destroyed, Prices Surge

Floodwater has damaged large tracts of vegetable fields, leaving supplies scarce. Traders report that prices of common vegetables have touched unprecedented levels. Spine guard is selling at Rs300 per kg, pointed gourd at Rs120, brinjal at Rs70, bitter guard at Rs80, ladyfinger at Rs60, beans at Rs150, ridge gourd at Rs60, cauliflower at Rs60 and cabbage at Rs 50.

Shravan Month Demand Adds Pressure

With the Shravan month underway, many households traditionally shift to vegetarian diets, further increasing demand. Traders said that prices may rise even higher in the coming weeks as supply remains disrupted. Customers complain that a full vegetable bag now costs nearly Rs500, straining household budgets.

Traders and Consumers Speak

Vegetable traders say the situation is unlikely to ease soon, as floodwaters continue to affect cultivation areas. “The fields are under water, crops are gone. Prices will rise further,” one trader said. Consumers, meanwhile, expressed frustration, noting that the surge has made even basic vegetables unaffordable.
