Bhawanipatna, July 3: Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has launched a new tailoring training batch under its flagship Project Sakhi, reinforcing its commitment to women’s empowerment through skill development and entrepreneurship in Odisha's Kalahandi district, officials said on Friday.
Since its inception in 2015, Project Sakhi has worked with over 500 Self‑Help Groups (SHGs), impacting more than 5,000 women across nearby villages in Lanjigarh area. The initiative has facilitated the creation of over 1,900 income‑generating enterprises in both farm and non‑farm sectors, enabling women to achieve financial independence and contribute to household incomes.
Implemented in partnership with the Shaktimayee Foundation, the programme equips women with practical skills, financial literacy, and livelihood support. The newly launched tailoring batch aims to provide employable skills and sustainable income opportunities, strengthening the project’s impact.
Pranab Kumar Bhattacharyya, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, Lanjigarh, said, “At Vedanta Aluminium, we believe that women’s empowerment begins with opportunity. Through Project Sakhi, we are equipping women with skills, confidence and the means to build sustainable livelihoods. It is inspiring to witness their transformation into entrepreneurs and role models within their communities.”
Beneficiaries echoed the sentiment. Namita Behera, a member of Maa Khambeswari SHG in Pediguda, said, “Before joining the tailoring training, I never imagined I could learn a skill that would help me earn and support my family. The programme has strengthened my confidence and given me greater independence.”
More than a skill development initiative, Project Sakhi is fostering confidence, financial independence, and social inclusion. By combining entrepreneurship training, livelihood support, and financial awareness, the programme is enabling women to emerge as catalysts of change within their families and communities.
The new tailoring batch marks another step in Vedanta’s broader vision of empowering rural women, advancing economic independence, and promoting inclusive growth in Odisha.
