Bhubaneswar, Sep 26: Vedanta chairman Anil Agarwal met Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at Lok Seva Bhawan on Saturday to discuss accelerating the proposed Rs 1 lakh crore aluminium project in the state, with the investment expected by the company to generate more than two lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The discussions focused on expediting execution milestones and strengthening industry-government coordination for the proposed investment, the company said.
The project comprises a 3 million tonne per annum (MTPA) aluminium smelter in Dhenkanal district and a 6 MTPA alumina refinery in Rayagada district.
Jharsuguda Smelter Expansion Also Proposed
During the meeting, Agarwal also proposed a brownfield expansion of Vedanta’s existing aluminium smelter in Jharsuguda by 1 MTPA.
The discussions focused on expediting execution milestones and strengthening industry-government coordination for the proposed investment, the company said.
The project comprises a 3 million tonne per annum (MTPA) aluminium smelter in Dhenkanal district and a 6 MTPA alumina refinery in Rayagada district.
Jharsuguda Smelter Expansion Also Proposed
During the meeting, Agarwal also proposed a brownfield expansion of Vedanta’s existing aluminium smelter in Jharsuguda by 1 MTPA.

The proposed Dhenkanal facility is also expected to supply hot metal to Vedanta’s downstream aluminium parks in Odisha, supporting further value addition and manufacturing activities, the company said.
On completion of the proposed projects, Vedanta said its cumulative aluminium production capacity could reach 6 MTPA.
CM Assures Support For Investment
Majhi said the Odisha government was focused on creating large-scale employment opportunities for the state’s youth and was working to attract investment from across India and abroad.
Considering the potential of the proposed projects for job creation and local development, the state government would provide all possible support to the investments in the aluminium sector, the chief minister said.
Agarwal said Vedanta’s proposed investments were aimed at building a large industrial ecosystem supporting infrastructure, energy transition, advanced manufacturing and emerging technologies.
“We are committed to building globally competitive assets, creating large-scale employment, strengthening local enterprises, and contributing meaningfully to a Viksit Bharat,” Agarwal said.

He also informed the chief minister that Vedanta would establish a 1,000-bed hospital in western Odisha.
Company Projects Over Two Lakh Jobs
According to Vedanta, the proposed Rs 1 lakh crore investment is expected to create more than two lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The company also said the project could generate more than 20 lakh livelihood opportunities through its potential multiplier effect across logistics, infrastructure, engineering and ancillary industries.
Vedanta said the investment would also support import substitution in strategic natural resources and contribute to the growth of MSMEs and supplier businesses.

Odisha’s Aluminium Potential
Aluminium is widely used in sectors including renewable energy, power transmission, electric vehicles, aerospace and infrastructure.
Vedanta also said the growing data-centre and artificial intelligence infrastructure could create additional demand for aluminium through applications such as power transmission, distribution, cooling systems and heat exchangers.
The company said its existing and proposed investments, including its aluminium smelter at Jharsuguda and alumina refinery at Lanjigarh, have the potential to strengthen Odisha’s position as a major aluminium hub.
Agarwal also reaffirmed Vedanta’s commitment to Odisha and described the company’s relationship with the state as a partnership that has developed over two decades.
