Vedanta Aluminium's Project Sangam Enables Irrigation On 800+ Acres In Odisha's Kalahandi
Project Sangam Recharges 11 Lakh Cubic Metres Water

Key Points

Vedanta Aluminium's Project Sangam has enabled irrigation on over 800 acres in Kalahandi, benefiting 9,000+ people across 41 villages.
Bhubaneswar, Apr 9: Vedanta Aluminium has enabled irrigation across more than 800 acres of farmland in Odisha’s Kalahandi district, benefiting over 9,000 people in 41 villages through its watershed initiative, Project Sangam.

Water Recharge And Infrastructure Development
According to the company, the initiative has facilitated the recharge of over 11 lakh cubic metres of water through the development of 61 water structures.

This has significantly improved groundwater availability and ensured sustained water access for both agriculture and domestic use in one of Odisha’s climate-vulnerable regions.

Scientific Approach To Water Management
Designed to address water scarcity, Project Sangam adopts a scientific and community-centric approach to watershed management.

The programme focuses on reviving traditional water bodies, creating sustainable irrigation infrastructure, and efficiently capturing monsoon runoff to replenish groundwater levels and reduce farmers’ dependence on erratic rainfall.

Company Highlights Long-Term Sustainability Goals
Commenting on the initiative, Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya, CEO of Vedanta Alumina Business, said water security remains critical for sustainable development in agrarian regions.

“Water security is fundamental to sustainable development, especially in regions like Kalahandi where communities are deeply dependent on agriculture. Through Project Sangam, we are integrating scientific watershed management with community participation to create enduring water assets,” he said.

Farmers Report Improved Livelihoods
Local farmers have reported significant improvements in agricultural output and income due to assured irrigation.

Krushnacharan Mali, a farmer from Balabhadrapur village, said, “For years, our farming depended entirely on uncertain rainfall. Through Project Sangam, we now have assured irrigation for our fields, which has transformed our farms and our lives.”

“With water available year-round, we are growing better crops, earning more, and no longer worry about leaving our land during dry months,” he added.

Expansion Plans Underway
Project Sangam, implemented by Vedanta Lanjigarh, aims to expand irrigation coverage to over 3,500 acres in the coming phases.

Officials said the initiative will continue to focus on ensuring year-round water availability for both agricultural and drinking purposes, while strengthening sustainable and community-led water resource management.
