Vedanta Aluminium’s Project Nirmal Delivers Safe Water to 23,000 Lives

Key Points

  • 23,000 residents benefit from safe drinking water.
  • 12 solar borewells & 20 purification systems installed.
  • Bio-toilets in 50 schools improve sanitation for 2,000 students.
  • Project saves 39,420 kWh annually, cutting 33.5 tonnes CO₂.

Sundargarh, Feb 26: Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, is driving sustainable community transformation through its flagship WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) initiative, Project Nirmal. Launched in April 2025, the project has already made a significant impact across rural Sundargarh and Jharsuguda districts, benefitting more than 23,000 residents.

The initiative includes 12 solar-powered borewells and 20 advanced water purification systems, collectively delivering 2.46 lakh litres of safe drinking water daily to villages such as Jamkhani, Ghogharpalli, Kuraloi, Mundelkhet, Girisima, Bileimunda, Chhatabar, Garjanjore, Grindola, Piplimal, and Belpahar. In addition, Vedanta Aluminium has installed bio-toilets in 50 schools, improving sanitation facilities for nearly 2,000 students.

Water scarcity has long plagued these regions, particularly during summer months. Before Project Nirmal, villagers relied on sources with turbidity levels between 6–12 NTU, posing health risks. With borewell-linked purification systems, turbidity is now consistently maintained at ≤1 NTU, ensuring safer household consumption.

The project also integrates clean energy solutions, generating 39,420 kWh of annual energy savings and reducing 33.507 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water & Sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable & Clean Energy), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
