Healthcare / Vedanta Aluminium Strengthens Healthcare Access in Rayagada, Kalahandi

Bhubaneswar, Sept 1: For families in Odisha’s remote villages, timely medical care often remains a challenge. Long distances, limited transport and the absence of specialist services delay treatment for expectant mothers, children and patients in urgent need. Vedanta Aluminium is working to bridge this gap by expanding its healthcare outreach across Rayagada and Kalahandi districts.

Building on its trusted ecosystem in Lanjigarh, the company has extended services to communities around the Sijimali and Kodigamali Bauxite Mines. Between April and July 2026, its Mobile Health Units (MHUs) organised 225 health camps, reaching 5,494 beneficiaries—2,558 in Rayagada and 2,936 in Kalahandi. These camps delivered consultations, diagnostics and medicines directly to underserved villages.

Complementing outreach, Vedanta-supported Primary Health Centres (PHCs) provide round-the-clock care. At PHC Sunger in Rayagada, 2,563 patients accessed services between May and July, including 60 institutional deliveries. The centre reported zero newborn deaths, underscoring its role in strengthening maternal and child healthcare.

Emergency response has been bolstered through ambulance services, with 95 trips in Kasipur Block (Rayagada) and 51 in Thuamul Rampur Block (Kalahandi) during the same period. Multi-specialty camps connected 358 patients with paediatricians and other specialists, reducing the need for long-distance travel. Free medicines further eased the financial burden on rural families.

Preventive healthcare has also been prioritised. Malaria and dengue awareness campaigns reached 220 community members, while breastfeeding awareness sessions engaged 209 mothers and caregivers. At Nand Ghar, Nakrundi, 74 lactating mothers participated in nutrition and infant health programmes. Vedanta also supported the Pulse Polio Programme at PHC Sunger, benefiting 90 children.

Together, these initiatives have touched over 9,300 lives across Rayagada and Kalahandi. With a new Vedanta Hospital planned in Rayagada, the company’s grassroots interventions are already reshaping healthcare access and outcomes in Odisha’s rural heartland.
