  • The scheme will focus on migrant workers, industrial and commercial employees, and working women who cannot afford to build homes in cities.

Bhubaneswar, Feb 6: The government has announced a major initiative to ease rental housing concerns in urban areas. Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) 2.0, unused houses belonging to central and state departments will be identified and offered to the urban poor at affordable rents.

According to officials, Additional Chief Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Usha Padhee, has written to multiple departments — including Agriculture, Energy, Finance, Food Supplies, Women & Child Welfare, Panchayati Raj, Scheduled Castes & Tribes, Health, and Cooperation — to provide details of unused housing stock in cities.

These houses will be repurposed to meet the growing demand for low-cost rental accommodation.

The scheme is designed to benefit those unable to construct their own homes in urban areas. Special focus will be given to migrant workers, employees in industries and commercial establishments, and working women. Authorities have assured that the initiative will not only reduce rental stress but also provide secure housing options for vulnerable groups.
