Sambalpur, Jul 22: Union Minister and local MP Dharmendra Pradhan has played a pivotal role in advancing a Rs1,195-crore master drainage project aimed at providing permanent relief from monsoon waterlogging in Sambalpur, Burla and Hirakud. The initiative, sanctioned under the Centre’s Urban Challenge Fund, marks a major step towards modernising urban infrastructure in western Odisha, officials said on Wednesday.

For years, residents of Sambalpur have endured severe flooding during even short spells of rain, with streets turning into streams and daily life disrupted. The district administration and Sambalpur Municipal Corporation have now moved towards a long-term solution, directing immediate commencement of work on the master drainage plan.

At a high-level meeting chaired by the District Collector, officials reviewed the causes of waterlogging and instructed departments to provide clear timelines for completion. The Municipal Corporation has signed an agreement with Ecometrix Consultant Pvt. Ltd. for preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and master plan.

The project will connect major drains across Sambalpur, Burla and Hirakud into a modern, smart drainage system capable of rapid discharge of rainwater. Authorities said the plan will not only eliminate recurring waterlogging but also strengthen resilience against urban flooding, protect public property, and improve quality of life.

Citizens and local intellectuals have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a long-awaited solution. “This blueprint will transform Sambalpur’s drainage system and end years of suffering during monsoon,” said a resident.

Officials emphasised that the project represents a milestone in building sustainable urban infrastructure. With the DPR process underway, work on the drainage master plan is expected to begin soon, promising lasting relief for thousands of residents.
