The victim had been undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar for over three weeks and passed away at 4:20 PM on Saturday.
The victim, a B.Sc. Nursing student from Jeypore, had reportedly consumed poison on July 17 following relentless harassment and cyberbullying. The accused, Satyajit Sarkar—a student of agricultural science—allegedly assaulted her in public and later leaked her private photos on social media. The emotional trauma led her to attempt suicide.
Her body was transported to Dumurimunda, where police had set up a security perimeter. The village witnessed an outpouring of grief as locals gathered to pay their respects.
The incident has sparked political unrest in the region. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) unit demanded Rs 1 crore in compensation for the victim’s family and called for a 12-hour bandh in Raighar.
The shutdown saw:
- Complete closure of shops and markets
- Suspension of public services, excluding emergency care
- Road blockades staged by BJD workers at major intersections
Following an FIR filed by Kalpana’s brother, police arrested both the main accused and a security guard allegedly involved in the photo leak.
