UGC Forms Fact-Finding Committee To Probe Balasore Self Immolation Case

Balasore, Jul 15: In the wake of the tragic death of  a second-year B.Ed student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has constituted a four-member Fact-Finding Committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The victim had submitted multiple complaints before setting herself ablaze on July 12 during a peaceful protest.

Despite being shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, she succumbed to 95% burn injuries on July 14.

The incident has sparked statewide outrage, leading to arrests of the accused professor and the college principal.

The UGC formed the committee to assess the situation, evaluate compliance with existing regulatory provisions.

The panel, chaired by Prof. Raj Kumar Mittal of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University and UGC member, includes Prof. Sushma Yadav, former UGC Commission Member; Dr. Neerja Gupta, Vice Chancellor of Gujarat University; and Dr. Ashima Singh, Joint Secretary of UGC, who also serves as the committee's coordinating officer.

The committee has been instructed to submit a detailed report with findings and recommendations within seven days.
