Two Major Crematoriums To Be Revamped In Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar, Oct 24: In a significant step toward improving urban infrastructure and public amenities, the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) has initiated the redevelopment of two major crematoriums in the Old Town area in the State Capital.


Ekamra MLA Babu Singh on Friday laid the foundation stones for the Kaligadia and Garabadu crematoriums, which will be upgraded to offer dignified and modern facilities for last rites, in the Old Town area in the city officials said.


Modern Facilities for Sacred Spaces

The Kaligadia crematorium will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs2.21 crore, while the Garabadu site will be revamped at an estimated cost of Rs1.85 crore. The BDA’s redevelopment plan includes essential infrastructure such as parking areas, boundary walls, security kiosks, staff and caretaker rooms, changing rooms, waiting halls, pyre wood storage, and cremation platforms (pindis).


To enhance the environment, both sites will feature landscaped gardens, water bodies, internal pathways, and peripheral drainage systems, creating a clean and serene atmosphere for grieving families.

BDA Vice-Chairman Chanchal Rana urged local residents to support the timely completion of the projects. He also announced the development of a third modern crematorium at Dumuduma, reinforcing the city’s commitment to accessible and respectful end-of-life services.


The foundation-laying ceremony was attended by local corporators, BDA Secretary Manas Ranjan Padhi, and other senior officials. These projects align with Bhubaneswar’s Smart City goals, aiming to meet growing urban needs while upholding compassion and dignity.
