Berhampur, Apr 13: Two persons were killed and three others sustained injuries in a head-on collision between two motorcycles near Podakhari under Surada police station limits in Ganjam district, a source said Monday.

The accident occurred when the victims were on their way to watch the traditional Danda Nach performance. The deceased were identified as Gurudeb Pradhan from Gobindpur village and Balia Mallik from Chanchadapalli village.

Three others -- Gayatri Mallik from Surada, Pintu Mallik from Bahagapalli, and Jitu Sethi from Lathipada -- sustained critical injuries in the crash.

On receiving information, Fire Services personnel reached the spot, rescued the injured and shifted them to the a hospital in Surada. Doctors there declared two persons dead, while the three critically injured were later referred to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for advanced treatment.

Police have seized the bodies and launched an investigation into the incident, officials said.

Rising Road Accidents in Odisha
Odisha recorded an average of 18 deaths per day in road accidents in 2025, Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena informed the Assembly on March 26.

In a written reply to BJP MLA Tankadhar Tripathy, the minister said the daily average death toll rose from 17 in 2024 to 18 in 2025.

A total of 12,625 people were killed and 21,576 injured in 25,157 road accidents reported across Odisha in 2024 and 2025.

In 2024, 6,142 people died and 10,770 were injured in 12,375 accidents.

The figures increased in 2025, with 6,483 deaths and 10,806 injuries reported in 12,782 accidents across the state.
