Sundargarh/Bonai, Apr 26: Sundargarh district of Odisha witnessed two tragic incidents on Sunday, with allegations that both victims succumbed to heatstroke while engaged in their respective duties. The cases have raised concerns about rising temperatures and the vulnerability of outdoor workers in the region.

In the first incident, Assistant Teacher Anurag Ekka of Jarada High School collapsed while performing census duties in Jarada village under Gurundia block. According to reports, Ekka was engaged in household enumeration when he suddenly fell unconscious. His wife rushed him to Sundargarh District Hospital, where doctors attempted treatment. However, despite medical intervention, he was declared dead. Family members have alleged that the death was caused by heatstroke, citing the extreme weather conditions prevailing in the area.

In a separate case, a 57-year-old daily wage labourer from Fakirmunda village under Koida block collapsed while working on the installation of a government tube well. Eyewitnesses said the man suddenly fell to the ground while digging. Villagers immediately shifted him to Lahunipada hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival. His family members also claimed that heatstroke was the cause of his death.

Both incidents have prompted police investigations. Authorities have stated that post-mortem examinations will provide clarity on the exact cause of death. Officials emphasized that only after medical reports are available can the allegations of heatstroke be confirmed.

Meanwhile, the twin tragedies have highlighted the urgent need for precautionary measures during peak summer months. Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can be fatal, especially for outdoor workers, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
