Berhampur, Apr 12: In a breakthrough, the Berhampur police have unearthed the Rs 14 lakh fraud case by arresting two cyber fraudsters from Gujarat.
The fraudsters had duped Behermpur University Vice-Chancellor Gitanjali Dash of Rs 14 lakh by issuing a digital arrest threat to her on February 14.
The two arrestees have been identified as Bhutia Yenil and Biswajit Sinh Gohil. The police have seized mobile phones and SIM cards from them.
According to the information, VC Dash received a synonymous call on February 14. Impersonating as CBI officers, callers told Prof Dash that an arrest warrant had been issued in her name as an illegal transaction of Rs 6 crore registered against her. They gave an account number and asked her to deposit Rs 14 lakh in the account. Shaken by the threat, Prof Das deposited the amount.

✨Later, the VC filed complaints with the Cyber Police State and Economic Offences Wing of Odisha Police regarding the fraud.
Since then, the Berhampur cyber and economic offenses police have been trying to nab the fraudsters. They managed to arrest two persons from Gujarat. They were produced before the CJM court at Bhavnagar in Gujarat and sent to transit remand.
