Bhubaneswar, Sep 22: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day heavy rainfall alert across Odisha as two low-pressure systems are expected to form over the Bay of Bengal.
The first system is likely to develop on Monday over the northern Bay, followed by another around September 25, raising concerns of widespread downpours that could dampen festive celebrations.
The IMD has warned that the twin systems may cause intense rainfall, waterlogging, and potential flooding in low-lying areas. District administrations have been put on alert.
Meanwhile, in response to rising water levels, authorities at the Hirakud Dam have opened two additional sluice gates, bringing the total to four.

The dam currently holds water at a level of 630 feet, indicating near-full capacity. Officials report that water is entering and exiting the reservoir at a rate of 1,02,271 cusecs per second through these gates.
The Water Resources Department is closely monitoring the situation, and further gate operations will depend on rainfall intensity and upstream inflows.
With the festive season underway, the twin weather systems
could impact celebrations and travel plans.
