Odisha Rituals / Trivikrama Besha Of Lord Jagannath To Be Performed Today Amid Tight Security In Puri

Key Points
Puri, Nov 3: The sacred Trivikrama Besha of Lord Jagannath, also known as Adikia Besha, will be performed today at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri on the occasion of Panchuka. This elaborate ritual takes place after the completion of the Avakash Niti, with Pushpalaka sevayats adorning the deities in ornate attire.
In this Besha, Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra will be decorated with distinctive chulas (hairpieces) crafted from sola, kana, beta, zari, jambura, and kaintha adhesive. These are further embellished with golden crests (kia) and crescent-shaped chandrikas. Goddess Subhadra will also receive similar adornments. The deities will be dressed in silk garments and adorned with traditional gold ornaments such as Ghagadamali, Barakolimali, Padmamali, Ginimali, and symbolic weapons like the Plough, Mace, Conch, and Chakra.
The Besha holds deep spiritual significance, especially among followers of the Atibadi Sampradaya and Panchasakha traditions. A large turnout of devotees and Mahantas is expected, as the Besha is believed to bestow immense spiritual merit.

Anticipating heavy footfall, the temple administration has restricted entry to the Singhadwara, with the other three gates designated for exit. On Sunday evening, a crowd surge at the Uttara Dwara led to a stampede-like situation, prompting police intervention. DGP Y.B. Khurania has arrived in Puri to oversee security arrangements. Additional police forces have been deployed, and traffic restrictions are in place to ensure safe darshan during the remaining days of Panchuka.
This year, Panchuka will be observed for four days instead of the usual five, due to the Kshyaya Tithi. Despite the shortened duration, temple authorities anticipate a surge in pilgrim footfall and have intensified arrangements to ensure smooth darshan and crowd management throughout the observance.
