Mayurbhanj, June 12: In a heartbreaking incident during a Shitala Puja visit, two cousin sisters lost their lives by drowning in a pond in the village of Bhaliagadia, Purunachandrapur under Amarda Panchayat, Rasgovindpur block of Mayurbhanj district.
The victims—13-year-old Sonali Behera from Khanabada village in Jaleswar block, Balasore district, and 15-year-old Pratima Padhiari from Dyarika village in Baliapal block—had come to their maternal uncle’s home, Navakumar Jena of Purunachandrapur, to witness the festival rituals.
While attempting to bathe in the backyard pond, they reportedly slipped and drowned. The incident has left the local community in deep sorrow during what should have been a time of celebration.
