Rayagada, Dec 28: Tikiri in Rayagada district has come to the news again with another burnt-to-death incident that occurred a week back, almost 11 years after lady teacher Itishree was burnt alive by miscreants. 

Laxmi Majhi, a local tribal girl, was reportedly burnt alive by miscreants. A handicapped, Laxmi was working in the Maa House in Chandrapur. She was reportedly raped and then set ablaze. Her half-burnt body was recovered from an abandoned well in the premises of Chandrapu Hospital on December 21.    

Family members have complained to police that their daughter was raped and then burnt to death. The body was later abandoned in a well as a move to destroy evidence. They have reportedly accused one Narasingha Mohapatra of the ghastly act.  

Meanwhile, the BJP has demanded justice for the Laxmi Majhi. The BJP Mahila Morcha observed a six-hour bandh in Rayagada. Yesterday, a fact-finding team met the family members of the victim.

The party has demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident. 

While Law Minister Jagannath Saraka said police are investigating the incident, tribals have expressed strong resentment.

"While seven days have passed, it is not understood why police have remained silent. Are they trying to protect the culprits," asked villagers.
