Berhampur, Feb 10: Three migrant workers from Odisha’s
Ganjam district were rescued from Tamil Nadu after allegations surfaced that
they were subjected to physical assault and harassment by their employer,
police said on Tuesday.
The incident has drawn attention to the continuing plight of
Odia workers employed in factories outside the state.
The rescued workers have been identified as B. Budu Reddy,
B. Poorna Reddy, and S. Dhuba Dora, all residents of Lakshmi Narayanpur village
under Digapahandi block. They had migrated to Tamil Nadu to work in a biscuit
manufacturing company.
Family members alleged that the company owner not only
withheld their wages but also subjected them to repeated assaults and
mistreatment. Distressed by the situation, the families approached local
representatives for help.

Responding to the complaints, Digapahandi MLA Siddhant
Mohapatra and the district Superintendent of Police coordinated with Tamil Nadu
authorities. A special police team, along with representatives from Odisha, was
dispatched to secure the release of the workers. Following sustained efforts,
the three youths were rescued and brought back safely.

The case highlights the vulnerabilities faced by migrant
workers from Odisha, who often travel to other states in search of livelihood
opportunities. Incidents of wage denial, exploitation, and abuse have been

Officials have assured that the rescued workers will be provided
with necessary support and rehabilitation. Meanwhile, investigations are
underway to determine the extent of violations by the company and to hold those
responsible accountable, officials added.
