Three Hospitalised In Nilagiri Wild Bear Attack

Nilagiri, Jan 22: Panic gripped Nilagiri town on Thursday morning after a wild bear was spotted roaming through residential areas, leaving three people seriously injured in separate attacks.


According to sources, the bear had reportedly entered the town in the early hours while returning to the Swarnachuda hill after foraging for food. The incident occurred in Sanaata Ward No. 8, where three residents came under sudden attack.


The first victim, identified as Pushpa Baitha, was attacked while she was plucking flowers near her house. The bear reportedly attacked her, leaving her severely injured and bleeding. Shortly after, the bear attacked an elderly woman, Kanak Kuanr, knocking her to the ground and causing fractures to her leg.


In another incident, one Nityananda Sahu was attacked while returning home.


All three injured persons were rushed to Nilagiri Medical Centre, where their condition is stated to be serious.

The presence of the bear in the town during the morning hours has caused widespread fear among residents. Many locals remained indoors, while parents restricted children from going outside amid safety concerns.


Forest Department officials have been informed, and efforts are underway to track the movement of the bear and prevent further incidents. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and avoid venturing out alone, especially during early morning hours, until the situation is brought under control.
