Ganjam, Sept 15: A shocking incident has marred preparations for Ganesh Puja celebrations in Khallikote, where a theatre rehearsal turned tragic after a local artiste was fatally attacked.

The incident occurred in Khojapalli village under Khallikote police limits. Villagers had been rehearsing a play scheduled to be staged on September 19. On Tuesday evening, two youths suddenly stormed the rehearsal venue and attacked theatre artiste Chitrasen Jena with knives.

Chitrasen was rushed to Khallikote Community Health Centre and later shifted to MKCG Medical College, Berhampur, due to his critical condition. Despite efforts, he succumbed to injuries during treatment. His death has cast a pall of gloom over Khojapalli village.

Police said the motive behind the attack remains unclear. Whether the assault was linked to personal enmity or disputes over the play is still under investigation. The two accused fled the scene and are currently absconding. Police have launched a manhunt to trace them.

Meanwhile, tension gripped Kukudakhandi area of Ganjam district after miscreants hurled four bombs in Bauri Sahi late on September 14.

The attackers arrived on a bike, threw bombs, and attempted to flee. Villagers retaliated by pelting stones, causing two of the miscreants to fall and sustain injuries.

Residents tied up the duo before handing them over to police. Sources said the bombing was linked to a clash earlier in the day, when a youth was attacked with sharp weapons on the main road. Police are investigating both incidents, which have raised concerns about rising lawlessness in the district.
